Stirling Castle

On the afternoon of the first full day in Scotland, we visited Stirling castle. This was incredibly interesting and the site of some really important historical events for Scotland.
In the picture above, you can see the 'Wallace Monument' on the far hill, commemorating William Wallace.. The valley you see between the castle and the monument is where Wallace fought and won his great battle against the English at Stirling Bridge in 1297. We thought we took a photo of the castle, but obviously didn't.  This is a statue of Robert the Bruce, who defeated the English at Bannockburn nearby. We enjoyed our afternoon at Stirling Castle, and Alan shared his knowledge on the history and happenings in the area with Wallace and Robert the Bruce, which made it more interesting. It is clear that (1) the Scots and not very impressed with the English and (2) they are less impressed with Mel Gibson as Wallace! We ended the day with a fabulous dinner at our hotel, with a few beers after. At least Michael, Lorna, Jackie and the rest of their team were either too tired or had already departed to give us another 'episode' at 3:00 am.
