1st Advent

The Advent wreath is part of the Catholic tradition. The actual origins are uncertain. There is evidence of Germans using wreathes with lit candles during December days as a sign of hope in the future warm and extended-sunlight days of Spring. Whatever the history of the advent wreath...everyone in Germany buys one, and they are sold at every shop you pass.
The wreath is made of pine branches, signifying continuous life.  The four candles represent the four weeks of Advent.  The Advent wreath is lit at dinner time.

Even though we are not religious, we like the advent wreath, and have one on our table. The boys love having it lit at dinner time.
